A little mold on a shower grout line is common. Mold spreading across walls, ceilings or inside the HVAC system is a different problem, especially for people with asthma or allergies.
Signs to look for
- A musty, earthy smell, often noticed before you see anything
- Dark spots on walls, ceilings, around vents or under sinks
- Condensation on windows and supply vents
- Allergy-like symptoms that get better when you leave the house
Moisture is the cause
Mold can't grow without moisture. Keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent, fixing leaks quickly and making sure the AC drain works are the best ways to stop it.
Small spots and big problems
Small areas on hard surfaces can often be cleaned with soap and water. Large areas, mold inside walls, or mold in the ductwork need professional cleanup, and the moisture source has to be fixed or it will come back.
